What should I do if I lose an adult tooth?

  • Call us ASAP at (905) 788-5555 — time is of the essence if you want to save the tooth.
  • If your tooth has been knocked loose, apply gentle pressure to push it back into place. Don’t force the tooth, as you could cause additional damage or pain.
  • If your tooth has become completely detached, avoid touching the roots. Place the tooth in milk, salt water, or saliva. Be sure to bring it with you to your appointment.
  • Carefully follow any instructions that our team gives you. We’ll explain how to manage your emergency until you can visit our office.

Does a toothache mean I need an extraction?

It might. However, a toothache doesn’t always mean you need an extraction. Our Oakville emergency dentist will provide you with a personalized diagnosis. Toothaches are often easily treated by a root canal or other restorative treatment.

How can I stop a toothache?

First, clean your mouth with warm water. Carefully remove any debris, such as food that is caught between teeth, using dental floss. Do not apply medications directly to the sore tooth or gums as this can worsen the issue. Rinse with a saltwater solution, apply a warm compress on the area, and make sure to call us right away.

How do I get sharp food out of my gums?

When an object gets stuck in your mouth or gums, you can use dental floss to remove it gently without doing more harm. Never use a sharp or pointed tool to remove it. If you do not see a way to remove it without doing any harm, you should come to see us as soon as possible.

My pain went away, do I still need to see a dentist?

Pain is your body’s way of telling you something isn’t right. If you’re feeling uncomfortable, even if the pain goes away after a few days, tell us about it! It’s likely there’s an issue still hidden under the surface and the pain will return in the future even worse than before.
